OpenTrack is an open-source application that can track head movements, allowing the use with games, flight simulators and similar software. With support for multiple input and output devices, as well as multiple protocols for data sending and receiving, OpenTrack can exchange data with most games that support headtracking.

The application comes in two flavors: an installer edition and a portable one. The latter requires no setup and is ready to use as soon as you double-click on the executable file. Furthermore, it leaves no traces behind on the host system, which surely makes it tempting to some.
The main GUI of OpenTrack bundles all the application’s options and features in a single window where you can see the raw tracker data alongside the game data. As for the output, there are multiple options available, which allows OpenTrack to communicate with various games and simulators: FlightGear, freetrack, FSUIPC, joystick / mouse emulation and UDP over network. The output defines how the movement data will be forwarded to the target game.

If you’ve used other headtracking solutions before and used multiple devices on one computer, then OpenTrack should not require too many instructions. The GUI is intuitive and the options are all within reach.
Being open-source and relatively new, it is still in its infancy and requires some tweaking to configure it to your liking. However, with the release of version 0.5.2 in May 2019, things can be said to be good enough as it is no longer necessary to compile and install the libraries.
The 0.8.0 release was published in November 2019, updating its user guide with a solid tutorial that may save you time on the setup and configuration process and is probably the last thing you need to do to set up this application.

How does OpenTrack Work?

The only disadvantage of using VLC or the default Mediamanager is that you will have to find and download all your media on the external drive on your desktop computer (or PS3 or XBox 360)
It’s simple to manage those files directly from the VLC. With the default Mediamanager, you’ll have to find the URL to each media and get a good internet connection and handle the download.
VLC is also better at playing some kinds of media that the default MediaManagert, including MP3 and video.
