If I could rewrite Deadlands for the 21st century, I would have made the following changes:
Rerouting the Wards:
There are five races for players to choose from in Deadlands. Years of evolution have added numerous minor subraces, the rare major subraces are still around, but we need a revolutionary re-routing of the arcane energies to best interact. To that end the mechanic has been weaponized.
Consolidation:
Next to Burning Wheel’s better use of mechanics, I think the consolidation/weight of detail behind every token and action in Deadlands is the game’s greatest strength. It’s great for supporting role-play, but as a full set of rules it’s a bit difficult to build and take them on the road. Same system, more separated, would be easier to navigate.
