Central to the book is the chapter “Multi-User Systems – What I Learned from the Experience of Century Copper Mining Company, famous for its equipment (where I worked as a production network administrator). This is not just a slogan. This is a guide to action. I have been able to achieve many wonderful results thanks to computers – software that can perform complex operations very quickly. But that’s not all. I have learned how to use computers to improve the performance of people, and this is much more important than the satisfaction of the end result.
Our company employed 250 people. We had to build a computing center that would meet modern requirements in terms of power and an acceptable budget.
When we created a computing node, a separate workstation was created for each employee with a minimum number of network connectors. The workstation could be running in DOS or Windows mode. In both cases, the data came to us over the network from the head office. All network cells were personal computers.
The expansion of the network required the creation of a new, “private” network containing only a personal computer. Thus was born America’s first multi-user computer.
We focused on not losing every client we worked with. The task was as follows: we had to create a network in which everyone could connect to any computer, anywhere in the network, and work on it without stopping. Passwords have been set to access the data. Thus, the system could be reliable, convenient and at the same time did not require personal responsibility from people.
Most people know (or guess) that passwords are a good way to protect their secrets, but unfortunately, it’s not always true. And if you are unlucky and you just exchanged a few words with a stranger, and he borrowed your password, then you yourself were responsible for it. In short, how will your ISP make sure you keep it?
